Omkring år 1900 blev Frederiksborg-hestene på hestestutteriet ved Frederiksborg Slot hjemløse. En kreds af hesteinteresserede dannede selskabet Frederiksborghingste-Opdrætnings-Anstalten, som i 1909 fik stillet Toftegård i Ølstykke til rådighed af den kendte hesteavler, H. Sørensen. Hermed var Ølstykkes ry som hesteby begyndt. <br />
Allerede i maj 1909 blev det første travløb afholdt ved stationen og kroen med opvisning på Toftegård. Det var en stor succes, som blev gentaget de følgende år.<br /><br />

H. Sørensen døde i 1912, og Jens Peder Hansen tog straks initiativet til at bevare opdrætningsanstalten. I 1913 købte han gården Hyldeland og omdøbte den til Ny Toftegård. Han byggede et nyt stuehus og ombyggede længerne. Den 6. december 1913 blev hesteavlscenteret Ny Toftegård indviet. <br />
I året 1920 stiftedes foreningen "Hesteavlscentret Ny Toftegård", hvor man drev stutteri indtil 1965. Herefter blev driften overtaget af Landbrugsministeriets Hesteeksportudvalg ved dets organisation "Danhorse".<br />
Lige fra 1928 har man hvert år i februar måned afholdt de landskendte hestesalg på Ny Toftegård. Det sidste marked blev afholdt i 1985. <br />
